Whether replacing, extending, or building, staircases are a key functional and visual focal point in your home.
Key factors to consider when planning a timber staircase
Budget – Your budget determines the wood type, detailing, and extras like lighting or storage, so setting clear financial limits helps avoid unexpected costs.
Choice of Material – Select from durable hardwoods like oak and walnut for a premium look or opt for cost-effective softwoods like pine, considering style, durability, and maintenance.
Size and Layout – Choose a layout that fits your space—straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, or spiral—ensuring it’s functional, safe, and properly measured.
Building Regulations – Staircases must comply with safety regulations, covering dimensions, tread depth, and handrail positioning, ensuring both style and legal compliance.

Your budget will determine the type of wood used for your new staircase. An oak staircase will create an impressive focal point but may stretch your budget a little. Other timber choices include; Yellow Pine, Ash, Iroko & Walnut. If you are on a tight budget we would recommend a standard carpeted staircase using softwood strings with mdf treads and risers.
